ITINERARY OF 2 DAYS MARRAKECH TOUBKAL MOUNTAIN TREK
Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil and Ascend to Toubkal Base Camp
Beginning the Ascent
Your trek starts with a drive from Marrakech to the small village of Imlil, the gateway to Toubkal. In Imlil, you’ll meet your guide, and possibly a mule to carry supplies, and begin the hike towards the Toubkal Base Camp. The path takes you through lush valleys, Berber villages, and along mountain streams, offering a glimpse into the life and natural beauty of the High Atlas. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more rugged, and the views more spectacular.
You’ll stop for a traditional lunch in one of the mountain gites (lodges) or under the shade of walnut trees before continuing the ascent. The hike to the base camp can take around 5 to 6 hours, so it’s a good day’s trek. Upon reaching the Toubkal Base Camp (also known as the Neltner Hut), you’ll settle in for the evening. Some trekkers choose to continue a bit further to the Ait Mizane Refuge. You’ll have dinner at the camp, enjoy the star-filled sky, and rest for the night in preparation for the early morning summit attempt.
Day 2: Summit Toubkal and Return to Marrakech
Reaching the Summit and Returning to Civilization
The second day starts early, often before dawn, to make the final ascent to the summit. This part of the trek is challenging, with steep and rocky paths. However, the effort is rewarded as the sun rises over the mountains, illuminating the landscape in a golden hue. Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal is an exhilarating experience. You’ll have time to take in the panoramic views, snap photos, and enjoy the sense of achievement. On a clear day, you can see the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert in the distance. After spending some time at the summit, you’ll begin the descent back to Imlil. The walk down can be tough on the knees, but the changing light and views keep it interesting. Once back in Imlil, you’ll have a chance to rest and perhaps enjoy a meal before the drive back to Marrakech.

- Guides and Porters: Hiring a local guide is not only safer but also provides valuable insight into the area’s culture and environment. Porters or mules can be hired to carry supplies.
- Gear and Clothing: Bring appropriate hiking boots, warm clothing, a sleeping bag, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so be prepared for cold and possibly wet conditions.
